My Abyssinians
Back To Home Page
Abyssinians will always be my first love.   Ever since I was child, I always wanted an Abyssinian guinea pig but I could never find one.   On Mother's Day 2006, my 10 year old triplets surprised me with a guinea pig, one from each of them as a present, and hence my passion for Abys really took off.
I decided to concentrate on brindles, red and roan Abys and have had some success showing them during 2007. In June 2007, I   managed to breed my own brindles which originate from very good blood lines.   These together with another litter born in August 2007 formed the start of my own line in this beautiful breed.

2008 got off to a wonderful start with Bridie, my home bred brindle Abyssinian sow winning Best of Breed at the Epsom show on 6th January 2008 beating a number of 5-8 and Adult Abys.   I was delighted to say the least.   I also attended an Abyssinian Stock show at Wyevern and did well with my U5s. The highlight of 2008 was winning the Abyssinian mini stock show at the London Championships in September with my Abyssinian sow, Bridie.   Sadly Bridie passed away in October 2008.   I have no idea what caused her death but am proud of what she achieved during her short life.   She was very well cared for, enjoyed showing and had the life of riley.   My shed is not the same without her.

Having lost Bridie and also Rufus, one of my main breeding boars, 2009 will be an interesting year.   I have a number of good youngsters coming up so fingers crossed for a successful 2009.

Showing Abyssinians is very easy as there is minimal amount of show preparation.   Boars are normally shown as their coats are harsher than sows.   I often feel that I have cheated before a show as they need very little doing to them.   However, I do tend to brush mine out throughly paying particular attention to the rosettes and ridges normally using a toothbrush.   Never bath an Aby before a show as the coat can become soft and loose it's harshness.

Many people do not like Abyssinians often saying that they can be aggressive and bite but I have never found this to be the case.   Abyssinians are very beautiful, inquisitive guinea pigs that are always the first to the front of the cage looking for food and can also be very vocal.   Abyssinian sows make excellent mothers usually going through a trouble free pregnancy.   Boars can live happily together in pairs if they are brought up together and make ideal pets.
ROSA
Rosa is a beautiful red Abyssinian who ha recently had her first litter in August 2007.
BYRON
Byron is our main stud boar.   He is a stunning Brindle boar from excellent blood lines.
More Brindle babies born on 27th August 2007 out of Bonnie my Brindle Aby sow and a show boar from good blood lines.
BONNIE
The very lovely Bonnie.   A pretty brindle sow who is Mum to the litter above.
BRIA
Another Brindle breeding sow currently sharing a hutch with Rufus.   This little madam wouldn't sit still on the show board to have her photo taken.   She would rather have a cuddle with Mum.
RUFUS
Rufus is my latest breeding boar to join my shed from Derek Pike's lines.   He is a handsome Roan boar who won Best of Breed in 2007 at Newark and Notts.   I am hoping he will produce some excellent quality Roans for showing during 2008.   Rufus passed away peacefully in Nov 2008 but will always be remembered as he was one of my main breeding boars who started off my foundation stock.
BRIDIE
Home bred Bridie is the daughter of Rosa and Byron.   She is a stunning brindle sow who done very well at shows during 2008 having won numerous Best of Breeds. She also won Reserve Best in Show and Best in Show.   The highlight of her show career was winning Best in Show at the mini stock show at the London Champs in September 2008.     Bridie passed away suddenly in October 2008 and is sadly missed.
BELLE
Another home bred Brindle sow out of Bonnie and Byron.   Belle is half sister to Bridie and is a breeding sow.
ROSETTA AND ROSANNA
My first home bred Roans.   Rosetta and Rosanna are the daughters of Rosa and Rufus and are both breeding sows.
ROSIE
Rosie is a pretty solid red Aby and is the daughter of Ruby and Rufus.   Although not showable, Rosie will be one of my breeding sows who hopefully will produce me some more Roan Abys as she carries Roan.
REUBEN
Reuben is a handsome solid red Aby boar and is one of my main show boars.
ROWAN
Rowan is a handsome strawberry Roan boar and is the son of Rufus and Rosa.   He will shortly be breeding with Ruby.
RHYDIAN
Handsome Rhydian is half brother to Rowan and also is the son of Rufus and Bella. Although he has a mainly blue roan body, he has a tort and white face making him an attractive Abyssinian.
BEATRICE
A young Brindle breeding sow
BERTIE
A handsome dark brindle breeding boar
BROOK
Another Brindle breeding sow.   Not the greatest of photos as this little one wouldn't look up.
ROBYN AND ROBERTA
Two lovely red breeding sows out of Reuben and Rosanna.   These two sows are useful additions to our breeding stock particularly as they both carry Roan.
BLUE MOON, BLUE DIAMOND AND BARNABY
Two beautiful mainly blue Roan boars and a brindle boar.   Blue Moon and Blue Diamond are my gift from Rhydian who sadly passed away far too young.   Barnaby is their brindle brother.   All three youngsters are looking promising for future showing.   Mum is Renee, a solid Red Abyssinian.
AEGEAN BLUE
Aegean Blue is a young, mainly blue Roan boar (hence his name) and was a gift from Simon to help me further my blue Roan project. Although showable, 'Blue' will be used as a breeding boar.
